Paddle to the Amazon – the film – is currently in the works through Insight Productions. Insight optioned the film rights for the book and their goal is to produce a major motion picture. Securing a screenplay writer for the movie is the first order of business. James Cameron – Titanic – was approached for the project but he’s currently committed to a number of upcoming films. An Italian writer was recently introduced to the story and has shown interest – but no confirmation yet. Stay tuned!
Two new tabs have been created under Mississippi ’17: Photos and 360 Film. Chris Forde will be taking 360 surround video during this summer’s canoe trip and we plan to post some along the way. Chris Forde has confirmed that he will be joining us for our canoe trip from the Quad Cities, IA to New Orleans, LA and will be shooting 360 surround film throughout the trip.
I’ve just learned that an actor who lived for 5 years in a sailboat with his family when he was a kid is interested in our story! I’m going to watch all of his movies and will post an update when I find out more.
John Murray is pursuing new screenplay writers and looking into collaboration with UK filmmakers.

John Murray is a writer, creator, and producer with Insight Productions. In early 2015, his feature documentary, How To Change The World, about the origin story of Greenpeace, directed by Jerry Rothwell and co-produced with Met Films in the U.K., was selected Day One World Documentary at Sundance 2015 and is the recipient of numerous accolades including The Sundance Jury Award for Editing, The Top Ten Audience Award at Hot Docs 2015, and the prestigious Pare Lorentz Award from the International Documentary Association. Recently acclaimed “one of the year’s most satisfying documentaries” by the LA Times, the film has been nominated for Best Documentary by the British Independent Film Association, and currently, sits on the Oscar long list in the feature documentary category.
As a member of the Insight development team, John is involved in the creation and development of programming in all genres, from reality and documentary to scripted series and movies. Along with development partner Shannon Farr, John created and co-produced Falcon Beach, a one-hour drama series for Global Television and ABC Family which sold into over 100 countries around the world. His current scripted projects include the television series adaptation of the bestselling Canadian novel Tempting Faith DiNapoli by Lisa Gabriele, currently in development with CBC, the half-hour single-camera comedy Saint Urban, for which he recently written the pilot, and a feature film based on the 1980 Canadian Bestseller, Paddle To The Amazon, written by Don Starkell, a true-life account of the author’s 12,000 mile canoe trip from Winnipeg to Belem, Brazil.
John also serves as the Supervising Producer of Intervention Canada, the Canadian version of the hit documentary series on A&E, about to enter its third season
