Dana Starkell was 19 when he undertook the two-year odyssey with his father and brother. In the course of the adventure, he cured his asthma, honed his skills on the classical guitar, and learned a great deal about the people he met throughout the 13 countries that encompassed the journey.
Following the release of the international bestseller “Paddle to the Amazon” in North America, Canadian and American promotional tours led to personal appearances on more than two hundred television and radio programs. Most notably: The Today Show with Jane Pauley, The Larry King radio show, The Morning Zoo in San Francisco, Canada AM, The Fifth Estate, The Dini Petty Show, and Front Page Challenge. Dana was also a winning contestant on the game show, To Tell The Truth.
As a professional speaker for many years, Dana has spoken to almost every type of audience imaginable. He has given presentations at hundreds of schools, professional groups, and adventure organizations. Dana’s unique speaking ability and slide presentations have captivated audiences throughout Canada and the United States. Dana’s slide presentations are renowned for their emotional impact on audiences and Dana is always willing to work with organizers to determine a desired focus or theme for the event.
Recently, the film rights for “Paddle to the Amazon” were purchased and the screenplay for a motion picture is under development.
Drawing from his personal experiences on what has been described as possibly the Greatest canoe adventure of all times, and utilizing his skills as an entertainer and teacher, Dana offers keynote presentations and slide shows to inspire and motivate your audience. Each presentation is adaptable to any size or type of event. Audiences have varied from over 750 people with the Black Feather Wilderness adventure company to as few as 14 people in a small community in northern Canada.
